Roanoke Public Libraries Seeks 1940s Photographs for Roanoke History Book

Roanoke Historian Nelson Harris is partnering with the Roanoke Public Library Foundation to write a sequel to Raymond Barnes’ book, "A History of the City of Roanoke." The new book will cover the history of the Roanoke area in the 1940s. The Virginia Room will host several opportunities for community members to have their 1940s Roanoke photographs scanned for possible inclusion in the book. The photo scanning events will be held in the month of May as follows:

  • Main Library, Thursday, May 2, 6 p.m.
  • Main Library’s Virginia Room, Saturday, May 11, 2 p.m.
  • Raleigh Court Branch Library, Tuesday, May 14, 12 p.m.
  • Williamson Road Branch Library, Wednesday, May 22, 12 p.m.
  • Gainsboro Branch Library, Thursday, May 30, 6 p.m.

Preferred photos include street scenes, events, churches, schools, and businesses from 1940s Roanoke.

Photographs that patrons bring to the photo scanning events will be scanned at the time of the event and returned after scanning. Photos selected for publication will be attributed to the owners and digital copies will be included in the Virginia Room Digital Collection.

If anyone is interested in participating, but cannot attend one of the scheduled events, please contact the Virginia Room at (540) 853-2073 or to set up an appointment to bring photos to the Library to be scanned.
