Lead Safe Roanoke recently received the 2018 Virginia Housing Award for Best Housing Preservation/Revitalization Effort at the Virginia Governor's Housing Conference in Arlington. The program is currently funded by a three-year, $2.7 million Lead-Based Paint Hazard Control Grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to test children for lead poisoning, educate and train the community on the hazards associated with lead-based paint, and identify, assess, and perform lead hazard control activities for housing units located in the city.
Roanoke won the award based on its continued effort for revitalization of housing to prevent lead poisoning. To date, 364 residential housing units in the city have been cleared of lead-based paint hazards through the efforts of Lead Safe Roanoke since the first lead hazard control grant was awarded to the city in 2003.
Lead Safe Roanoke has active partnerships with more than 50 area agencies, non-profits, and organizations including state and local housing agencies, health providers, childcare providers, neighborhood organizations, and faith-based organizations.
