The 6th Annual Lea’s High School Winter Classic Basketball Challenge will take place on Saturday, Jan. 11, at Berglund Center. Local high school basketball teams will compete for the Southwest Virginia County Cup and the Mayor’s Cup. Tickets are on sale at Berglund Center Box Office and online at roanokelive.com.
Virginia Career Works Announces Support
This week, Virginia Career Works – Blue Ridge announced a partnership with the City of Roanoke for a new stabilization and empowerment initiative aimed at supporting individuals who have been part of the recent layoffs at Norfolk Southern, FreightCar America, and General Electric. Those interested in learning more are invited to attend an informational session at 5 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 13, at the Jefferson Center, 541 Luck Ave SW. Click here to read the complete announcement.
Sculpture Installation Planned for Melrose Library
On Friday, Jan. 17, the newest addition to Roanoke’s Public Art collection, “Rhapsody in Knowledge,” will be dedicated at the Melrose Branch Library, at 1 p.m. The branch is located at 2502 Melrose Ave NW, Suite D. “Rhapsody in Knowledge” is a three-part sculptural series created by artist Napoleon Jones-Henderson, executive director of the Research Institute of African and African Diaspora Arts, Inc. and BENNU ARTS, LLC, in Roxbury, Mass. City to Observe MLK Day Holiday
City offices will be closed on Monday, Jan. 20, in observance of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday. As a result, the 2 p.m. City Council meeting and the 7 p.m. Public Hearings will be moved to Tuesday, Jan. 21. Also, the solid waste collection schedule will be impacted with "A week" recycling, bulk, and brush collection delayed one day for the entire week. WazUpwidis Urban Race Returns
Roanoke’s most breathtaking race, WazUpwidis, is back on Feb. 1, ready to test the fortitude of anyone willing to brave the elements and course. The race runs through, up, and over a few of Downtown Roanoke’s landmarks, traversing surprisingly difficult elevation in two of the City’s parking garages and finishing with a breathtaking climb and descent in the Wells Fargo Tower.
