Refuse collection is provided to all city residences. Each household is issued a 96-gallon automated container, known as "Big Blue," which is mechanically serviced by a One-Arm Bandit Truck on a weekly basis.
Single-Stream Recycling collection is provided on a biweekly (A week or B week) basis the same day as residential refuse collection. To maximize the productivity of this program, both paper and plastic, and other recyclables can be placed in the recycling cart for pickup.
Residences that have alley collection can combine paper and plastic recyclables in the small green recycling bins.

Bulk and brush collection is provided on a weekly basis the same day as residential refuse collection. Items that will not fit into the "Big Blue" are collected at the curb.
Central Business District
The Central Business District is now mostly a self-service trash and recycling district. The city currently has five sealed compactor zones. These five zones allow residents and businesses to dispose of their trash and recycling 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Click here for more information.
Downtown Roanoke's Central Business District Trash Compactors
A Central Business District trash compactor program was established through a partnership between Downtown Roanoke, Inc. and the City of Roanoke. The compactors are sealed and prevent the build-up of business waste on Downtown sidewalks, as well as the on-street pickup during peak outdoor dining hours. To read more, click here.
