Special Programming
The Roanoke Public Libraries sponsors special programming events for National Library Week in April and Children's Book Week in November. Please call Youth Services at 540-853-2955 for program content and schedules.

Storytime is a program to promote a life-long love of reading. Main Library storytimes are open to prescheduled childcare providers, individual caregivers, and parents with their children. Some branch locations offer storytimes for children ages 3 to 5 years. Children's storytime schedules will vary at each location. Please call for program content and specific times.

Summer Reading Program
The Roanoke Public Libraries offers annually an entertaining, educational, non-competitive Summer Reading Program. We invite and encourage all youth to participate.

Studies have shown that school-age children who read during summer vacation maintain or improve their reading skill. Our Summer Reading Program is one that involves the entire family, since we are concerned with aliteracy (not reading) as well as illiteracy (not knowing how to read). Parents or older siblings are encouraged to read aloud to non-reading members of the family.

The Summer Reading Program features special activities, a reading log to record the titles of books read, special programs, suggested book lists, and reading incentives.

Tours of the Main Library are available for classes and groups. Tours can be scheduled to begin as early as 9:30 a.m., Monday through Thursday. We recommend that you make your tour reservation well in advance, since the time slots fill up quickly!
