We develop plans and policies to shape and improve the social, economic, and physical development of the city.

Vision 2001-2020 is Roanoke's comprehensive plan is the basis for all policy decisions made by the City of Roanoke and serves as an "umbrella" for the many other plans adopted as components of the comprehensive plan.  Smaller, more focused plans have been adopted as components of the Comprehensive Plan. Each have either been adopted by City Council or endorsed by a Council appointed Board of Commission. Vision 2001-2020, the City of Roanoke’s Comprehensive Plan, is the product of an extensive collaborative planning process involving a citizens’ advisory committee, citizen-based task teams, City staff, consultants, the Planning Commission, City Council, and the public at-large.

Here you'll find the Vision 2001-2020 plan as well as plans for each of Roanoke's neighborhoods.   Many other plans address special topics such as greenways, bikeways, libraries, arts and culture, and public art.

The Projects & Programs tab has information on our special projects like historic surveys of neighborhoods and brownfield assessment programs.

Under the Urban Design tab, you'll find our street design guidelines, urban design manual, architectural guidelines, neighborhood architectural standards, and our award-winning residential pattern book.
