In September 2014, the Roanoke Police Department started a partnership with the Big Brothers Big Sisters Oliver Hill House where officers would come in at least once per week to help kids with their homework. Many of the kids had never had any positive interaction with a police officer and seemed skeptical at first. But after of showing the children they would be consistent in their visits, the officers quickly won the children over! The program has led to four officers joining the organization as a Big Brother or Big Sister to a child. The initiative has been so successful that it expanded to the West End Center where officers acted as tutors for kids in math, spelling, and English. Later this fall RPD will add the Community Youth Program at St. John's Episcopal Church to its RPD Homework Helpers schedule.
