 Jones

Chief of Police Tim Jones



Chief Jones was named acting chief after the retirement of Chris Perkins on March 1, 2016.                                                   On July 12, 2016, Jones was named Chief of Police following an extensive selection process                                             with input from departmental staff and a diverse panel of citizens.                                                                                             
He has served the department since 1981.  He is a graduate of the Harvard University-                                              Kennedy School of Executive Education, the 232nd class of the FBI National Academy                                           at Quantico, and the Senior Management Institute for Police Executives at Boston University.

Deputy Chief Jones has been published in CALEA Update magazine and Police Chief
magazine.  He is also an adjunct professor at Virginia Western Community College.

 Lee

Deputy Chief Monti Lee



Deputy Chief Lee oversees the Investigations and Support Division, which is made up of
the Investigations Bureau, Support Services Bureau, Planning and Analysis, and the 
Roanoke Police Training Academy.  He started his career with the department in 1985.

He is a graduate of the Forensic Science Academy, the Professional Executive 
Leadership School [PELS], the Harvard University-Kennedy School of Executive 
Education and the Institute of Leadership in Changing Times [ILCT].

 Roman

Deputy Chief Samuel Roman



Deputy Chief Roman supervises the Uniform Operations Division and has been with the department since 1992.
He is a graduate of the National Criminal Justice Command College, the Professional 
Executive Leadership School [PELS], and the Harvard University-Kennedy School of
Creating Collaborative Solutions and Innovation in Governance.

Deputy Chief Roman is also a proud veteran of the United States Marine Corps.

 Morrison

Captain Rick Morrison



Captain Morrison started his law enforcement career in Florida and joined the department
in 1996.  He oversees the Community Response Bureau , which includes the Downtown
Beat, the School Resource Officers, and the Animal Protection and Services Unit.  Captain
Morrison also supervises the department's crime analysis unit, ISTAR.  He is a graduate of
the Professional Executive Leadership School [PELS], a certified Crime Prevention Specialist,
and a Department of Homeland Security Instructor. He also attended the first Law
Enforcement Leadership Training Seminar sponsored by the FBI National Academy.

 Charles  

Captain Eric Charles



Captain Charles started his career with the department in 1992 and supervises the 
Investigations Bureau, Support Services Bureau, Planning and Analysis, and the Roanoke
Police Training Academy.  He is a graduate of the Drug Unit Commander School, the
Professional Executive Leadership School [PELS], and the National Criminal Justice
Command College.

 Smith

 Captain Chester Smith



Captain Smith began his career at the department in 1985.  He supervises the Patrol Bureau.
Captain Smith has prior experience as a school resource officer, community oriented policing, and 
was the previous director of the Roanoke Police Training Academy.

Captain Smith is a graduate of Radford University and is currently pursuing a master's degree from 
the University of Virginia.
